TIL: Pontiac G3 = Saturn Aura/Opel Vectra = Chevy Malibu - Saab 9-3 = Cadillac BLS.
Wat. It continues to blow my mind how much badge engineering/parts bin engineering GM used to do not even a whole decade ago.

Why would that cost more than a Tercel?

Because fuck you, that’s why.

the best were the ads in the late ‘50s for the “wide track” Pontiacs. The ad art showed exaggeratedly wide drawings of the cars.

I don’t know what’s going on with this one. Maybe they looked at an Edsel and thought “If one hoop grille was good, maybe two will be better!” Or maybe its inspiration was a birdpig. or pigbird.

G6.
The G3 was an Aveo/something different in every Asian country..

Some new wheels to fill out the fenders and it would be. I like those Bonnies

Crap!!! I swear my brain was thinking “Pontiac G6" (I even Wikipedia’d it) but somehow I spit out G3...which *shudder* is not a car I want to remember.

Here’s my two GTOs, but I don’t have a picture of my Firebird....
GTO meet I went to a few years ago.

I figured, but just took the opportunity to twist the knife on “old” GM

The only two among those vehicles that shared a single body panel were the 9-3 and BLS. And the BLS was never even sold in the same markets as the Malibu, G6, and Aura.
Back in the day, GM had 8 or 9 vehicle brands in the US market alone. If 6 of them sell midsize sedans, what are you going to do? Engineer totally different platforms for each of them, only to cannibalize each other’s sales?
And how is this any different than VW selling the Octavia, Leon, Golf, and A3 (and several others) off the same platform today?
![]() 09/12/2016 at 14:09 |

Well the Epsilon II platform has the Buick Regal/Opel Insignia, Buick Lacrosse, Saab 9-5, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac XTS. So they still do platform sharing but at least they don’t all look the same.

You can see it behind the Gen Coupe in these pictures.
